On Oct. 8, 2024, the comment period begins for the proposal to issue an Arizona Pollution Discharge Elimination System (AZPDES) renewal permit to the City of Mesa for the proposed discharge of up to 18 million gallons per day (mgd) of treated domestic wastewater from the City of Mesa Northwest Water Reclamation Plant to the Salt River in Maricopa County, Arizona. The comment period ends Nov. 6, 2024.

City of Mesa applied for a renewal AZPDES permit for the proposed discharge of up to 18 million gallons per day (mgd) of treated domestic wastewater from the City of Mesa Northwest WRP to the Salt River in the Middle Gila River Basin in Township 1 N, Range 5 E, Section 7, in Maricopa County, Arizona. The City of Mesa Northwest WRP is a publicly owned treatment works that receives domestic wastewater from residential, commercial, and industrial sources in Mesa, Arizona. Sludge undergoes thickening for anaerobic digestion followed by dewatering and Class B pathogen reduction with a minimum of 38 percent reduction in volatile solids for land application.
