PRESS RELEASE

ADEQ Launches Enhanced Permits in Process Online Interactive Map and Reporting Tool

PIP provides Arizonans with daily details about statewide environmental permitting

PHOENIX (Nov. 12, 2024) – Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) officials announced today the expansion of its Permits in Process (PIP) interactive map and reporting tool to include details about the status of all individual permits in process with the agency across all divisions – Air Quality, Waste Programs and Water Quality. As part of ADEQ’s ongoing commitment to increase transparency about statewide permitting activities and to better serve the public and the regulated community, Arizonans can now conveniently get information about the most complex state environmental permits using a computer or smartphone, 24/7.

“Engaging with Arizonans is at the heart of ADEQ’s mission,” said ADEQ Deputy Director Karen Peters. “This new tool isn’t just about providing information—it’s about inviting our communities to take part in decisions that directly impact their environment. We are proud to make it easier than ever for people to stay informed, share their thoughts, and join us in protecting the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the land where we live, work, and play.”

Updated daily, the enhanced PIP provides details about and the status of all individual environmental permits for facilities that ADEQ oversees. Information about new individual permit applications submitted to ADEQ is also available to view within 24 hours of receipt.

  • Arizonans can use these tools to learn about facilities and environmental permitting in their neighborhoods or anywhere in the state.
  • Individual permit applicants can easily track the progress of their application and know which ADEQ employee to contact directly with permitting questions.

While the most up-to-date information is available on the online interactive map and reporting tool 24/7, interested parties can sign up to receive monthly notices via email | Subscribe >

For more than a decade, Arizonans have used ADEQ’s PIP to stay informed about water quality permitting including municipal wastewater treatment plants that treat household sewage, industrial sites that treat or store the byproducts of an industrial process, landfills and other waste storage facilities, copper mines and smelters, power facilities, and other manufacturing operations.

Arizona’s environmental regulations require that facilities are built, operated and monitored so that discharges to the air, water and soil are within acceptable standards and will not adversely affect the environment. ADEQ issues permits to support these regulations and inspects facilities to ensure they operate within a permit’s terms. Permits inform facilities of legally enforceable conditions for operation, as well as provide reporting and monitoring requirements. The permitting process also engages Arizonans as decisions are made about proposed activities affecting their local environment.
